Happiness and contentment, good relationships, meaningful work and fun adventures – sounds like a good life to me!
Do you aspire to something similar?
How do we keep that intention in sight, when life will inevitably present us with people and situations that seem unfair.
Actions may be taken that leave us feeling wounded by injustice, ignorance or what seems to be just plain human meanness.
Anger, resentment and other strong emotions may naturally arise in response to these people and situations. And for many, emotional scars may form that become an additional burden carried through life.
So how do we skillfully navigate these experiences, let go of them, and re-ground ourselves in happy intentions?
Our power comes in the choices we make. How we respond can have a significant impact on our experience of life.
American author and motivational speaker, Wayne Dyer, puts it beautifully:
“Whatever you’ve got inside of you is not the result of what anybody else puts there. It’s the result of what you decide to have inside you."
He speaks about forgiveness as the “greatest motivator in the world” in this short, compelling video.
When you choose to stop carrying the burden that comes from lack of forgiveness, you create space for other, happier things to flow into your life.
The first step in developing this process is owning it - recognizing that you are holding on to a lack of forgiveness. Notice where you feel it in your body, as well as the thoughts and emotions that arise around it.
What we resist, persists. By allowing our experience to be what it is, we can stop resisting and start allowing. We can open our hearts to love and let go of the grievances stored in our body and our psyche.
An experiential way to practice this skill of letting go is offered on our Mindful Adventures. We spend eight days being with what’s present inside of us and practicing letting go of what no longer serves us. And come away from the process with a lighter heart, more clarity and practices to bring home into everyday life.
Free practices to develop letting go and other skills are also offered in our series on the 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness.
Wishing you of week full of ease and grace - and forgiveness.
Let your wisdom lead,
Robin
